  The Two Star award is an improvement award, to help develop flat water skills run over two days.
 
 
Canoe Craft
To obtain this award an assessment is undertaken in both a kayak and a canoe (any style craft).
Kayak Group
  Pre-requisites
Should must be able to swim 25mts wearing a Buoyancy Aid. Have experience of paddling two different craft. in two different locations i.e. Canal, River, Lake/loch or Sea
 

Part A- Personal Paddling Skills
Lifting, carrying and launching, forward paddling, Steering, Maneuvering in a confined spaces, moving sideways, preventing capsize, turning, Returning to bank and securing craft.

Part B- Safety & Rescue Skills
Capsize, swim and self rescue and peer rescue.

 

Part C- Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
Personal risk management, Awareness of others, an assessed sheltered journey.

Part D- Theory
Questions on equipment, safety, assess, planning, environment, hypothermia.

About the Course!  
 

Times 9.15am to 4.30pm

Based over two days
Arrive at our center where you will be introductions to your instructor for the day and the equipment you will be using for the day.
Once kited up your instructor will talk you through the days events, covering the type of craft, paddles, and general equipment.

 

Day 1 Kayak day, we will revisit your 1 star skills and introduce you to a variety of new technical skills and enable you to develop your boat control in more challenging conditions.
Lifting/Carrying of kayak and canoe:-looking at safe moving and handling techniques.
Forward Paddling:- covering good posture, rotation of body, and use of major muscles in the body.
Steering of kayak and canoe:- Looking at various ways to to steer a craft.
Maneuvering:- Controlling direction and position of the craft.
Moving Sideways:- Good techniques to move the craft sideways safely through the water.
Preventing a Capsize:- Low & high brace recovers, Sculling support, and body positions.
Turning:- looking at a verity techniques to effectively turn the craft.
Returning to bank:- Practicing getting in and out of craft.
Securing:- Ways to secure boats to trailers and roof bars using ropes & straps.
Self rescue:- Controlled capsize and self rescue.
Peer rescue:- Rescue of other boaters, in deep water.
Safety, leadership & Group Skills:- Personal risk management & Awareness of others, sheltered water journey including planning, weather, map work group control.
Theory:- Covering all aspects of canoe safety and understanding of the canoeing award.

Day 2 Canoe Day:- covering all the techniques covered in a kayak

At the end of the two days a final debrief and round up of the two days.
